IU Surplus Stores offers two options for securely destroying your media storage devices:

Shredding
Bring your drives or other storage media to the store for secure shredding.

The price for this service is as follows:
Hard drives $3.25 each
Other media including VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks $3.00 per lb.
NOTE: You will need to provide an IU account number and a total drive count for billing purposes at the time of service.

Instructions: To schedule in-store hard drive shredding, contact surplus@indiana.edu and complete the Transfer Items to Surplus Stores form.


Hard Drive Crushing
Our crusher offers your unit a less expensive and quicker alternative to shredding, while still ensuring secure destruction. Simply bring your drives to the store or arrange for the crusher to be delivered to your unit for onsite use.

The price for this service is as follows:
In Store:
Hard Drives $1.00 each
NOTE: You will need to provide an account number and a total drive count for billing purposes when you arrange for the delivery of the machine.
On Site:
Minimal Fee of $50 for crusher delivery, set up and training (There is no additional charge for pickup).

Instructions:
For hard drive destruction contact surplus@indiana.edu to schedule either in-store destruction or the machine's delivery. Please specify the length of time in days/hours that you will require use of the machine. The manufacturer suggests allowing 7 seconds average cycle time per drive, though your actual cycle speed may be somewhat slower. IU Surplus Stores staff will conduct a brief training to ensure proper machine use.e. Note: Your building must have a dock to receive the delivery, and the crusher is only for use in a secure office/room setting. Once you have crushed your unitís drives, IU Surplus Stores will pick up the machine and the drives. There is no additional charge for pickup. This service is for destruction of IU departmentally owned drives only.

Final Disposal
When destruction is complete, all drives will be responsibly recycled through IUís e-waste vendor, Vintage Tech.

Other Media
For other media such as CDs, DVDs and cell phones, please box your items and provide an IU account number for billing along with the a Transfer Items to Surplus Stores form. You may drop off the items or have Surplus Stores pick them up at no charge.
